Strategic Planning
Strategic Planning is a process through which an organization or system discerns its unique and optimum opportunity and responsibility midst the assumptions about their current situation. We especially enjoy working with groups of all types in assisting them with strategic planning events using the ToP Strategic Planning framework.
The process of the ToP Strategic Planning takes the planning group through several steps intended to explore the perceptions and understandings and by using participatory, interactive and inclusive values, create insight and potential paradigm shifts and then come to consensus around them. This is the key to new wisdom and effective action and responsiveness or the organization to its environment.
We set the stage by uncovering and discovering much of what can be known and being assumed about the environment, assets, potential, and possibilities of the group or organization as is possible in the time alloted for the work.
We form a Focus Question which guides every function of the planning process.
From this context we build a foundation in what we call the Practical Vision which creates a practical yet hoped for future.
Then we move to the Underlying Contradictions where we will ask: If our hoped for Vision is to be realized, what are the deterrents, blocks, barriers which must be dealt with? This helps discern some of the root causes that must be responded to if we re to move toward the vision.
Next we surface the Practical Actions that deal with the Contradictions and move us toward the Vision. These become a range of creative actions that will inform focused strategies.
Finally, we conclude with the Implementation Steps where we put specific smart actions into the hands of real people.

We also teach a participatory strategic planning course, ToP Strategic Planning, which can take a practiced facilitator to a place of leading planning events using these methods on their own. It also teaches ways to take the components of strategic planning and incorporated them into the design of less complex facilitated planning events.
The course also gets the participants inside the process so they can co-facilitate with us if they need to use a professional facilitator to provide an outside perspective and provide a neutral voice.
